Adult Genetics

Surprisingly, one in ten adults has a genetic condition*. If you or your relatives have a history of cancer, heart disease, iron overload, neurological disease, or strokes to name a few, there may be a genetic component that is responsible. More is being learned everyday about the role that genetics plays in common adult diseases. Genetic testing may help identify family members that have a higher risk than others, and may allow other family members to get more appropriate screening and medical management.

OriGens can evaluate your personal and family history for common adult conditions or rare adult genetic diseases. We can keep you abreast of the latest advances in genetics and appropriate testing. OriGens can also discuss the complexities of presymptomatic testing and make you aware of the many challenges associated with this.

Genetic testing may not be possible for all conditions. OriGens will work with your doctor to help you identify potential genetic risks for your family. A family history of these, and other conditions may be appropriate for genetic consultation:
  • Cancer
  • Cardiac disease (Long QT syndrome, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy)
  • Hemochromatosis (hereditary iron overload)
  • Kidney disease (Polycystic kidney disease)
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • Huntington's disease
  • Hereditary Ataxia
  • Muscular dystrophies
This list is not meant to be comprehensive. If you have two or more relatives with a similar disease, talk to your doctor about whether there may be a genetic OriGen.
