FAQ's

Where is OriGens located?
OriGens was founded because access to Genetic Services is limited. Patients are often asked to register in new hospital systems, drive long distances, and navigate large hospitals for a one-time-only visit. OriGens strives to increase the ease and accessibility to meet with genetic professionals. This is done within the comfort and convenience of your own doctor's office.

What type of testing is offered?
This depends on your family history. There are hundreds of genetic diseases, many with testing available. Some testing may consist of screening tests to modify your risk. OriGens will help select which, if any, testing is best and most appropriate.

What type of information should I gather before my visit?
Your Genetic Risk Assessment depends on the accuracy and completeness of your family history. A general rule is to familiarize yourself with first and second degree relatives (siblings, parents, children, aunts, uncles, grandparents, nieces, nephews, etc) to collect a health history for the family. Take note of specific diagnoses, age and cause of death, age at diagnosis, etc. Sometimes a call to a relative may assist with this process.

How long will the appointment be?
The complexity of your case may determine the length of the visit. Many pregnancy related visits may be 30-45 minutes. Other cancer risk assessments may last 1-2 hours. OriGens can help you estimate how long the appointment might be.

How soon can I be seen for an appointment?
This is one of the main points of emphasis for OriGens. Many Genetics programs have waiting times of many weeks or even months. OriGens works with your doctor to be able to provide consultation within one to two weeks, if possible.

Will insurance pay for my consultation and genetic testing?
In many cases, insurance will pay for the consultation and appropriate genetic testing. It is impossible to say this for all insurance providers however, as it will depend on the carrier. Check with your doctor and/or insurance provider to see if your plan covers the consultation and any appropriate testing. Some patients may also prefer to pay cash and submit a bill for reimbursement as to not delay an appointment.
