First Trimester Screening

Origens - Prenatal GeneticsThere are thrilling advances being made in genetic screening during pregnancy. A monumental shift is taking place emphasizing earlier, more accurate screening. OriGens is excited to bring First Trimester Screening to you. First trimester screening is the most effective screening tool to identify pregnancies at risk for Down Syndrome, and more sensitive than current second trimester screening (AFP screening, Quad screening). It is our goal to make this superior tool available to anyone that wants it.

Second Trimester Screening

Second Trimester Screening is the current standard of care for pregnancy screening. Changes are taking place at the local and national level with this screening. California plans to drop the current Expanded AFP triple screen in favor of Quad screening. How do these changes impact your pregnancy? OriGens can use these tests to inform you what, if any, pressing risks there are for the pregnancy. Ultrasound is an important part of second trimester and the screening process. OriGens provides valuable interpretation of ultrasound anomalies, serum screening and potential risks for the pregnancy.

Prenatal Diagnosis

With advances in prenatal screening is there still a need for prenatal diagnosis? Undoubtedly. Prenatal diagnosis remains the most accurate, diagnostic approach to identifying chromosomal or genetic errors in a fetus. If your family has a history of a genetic disorder, genetic screening may not be effective at determining affected pregnancies. Prenatal diagnosis consists of:
  • CVS-(Chorionic Villus Sampling)
  • Amniocentesis
These procedures have unique risks, benefits and limitations and require appropriate discussion.

Advances in pregnancy screening have created wonderful opportunities for informed and educated patients. With so many options available, in can also create considerable confusion. We know these decisions are sometimes overwhelming and have sat with hundreds of patients with similar concerns. Allow OriGens to be a sounding board for making these important decisions for your pregnancy and your family.
